About the NewRoads LakeRide
March 2021 marked the one year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic, it continues to present challenges for all of us and we remain grateful for those in the front lines who battle the pandemic daily. Southlake Regional Health Centre continues to make significant strides in fighting this virus while taking a leadership role in our community and beyond. We are proud to be their partners.
Today, Southlake’s Mental Health Program is facing the perfect storm, with capacity challenges made worse by critical factors close to home. In our rapidly growing communities, we are seeing rising rates of dementia, addiction and mental illness, and COVID-19 has caused isolation and effects on mental health that will be felt long after the pandemic is over.
Southlake’s Mental Health Program has seen more than 1,000 adult inpatient admissions and more than 33,500 adult outpatient visits. Child and adolescent patients have also made up more than 9,600 outpatient visits, and nearly 7,000 eating disorder visits.
Last year we partnered with the Foundation to launch a very different version of the NewRoads LakeRide. Temporarily branded the NewRoads #RideTogetherApart in support of the Mental Health program at Southlake Regional Health Centre, this virtual individual cycling event was the first of its kind and held an overwhelming drive to raise awareness and support for Mental Health in the face of COVID-19.
This event quickly attracted attention, and within three weeks we saw 12 teams, 200 cyclists and over 100 donors raising $30,000. We are very much looking to provide an opportunity to get out and ride safely this year and we're asking for your help again as we announce the return of our cycling event. The NewRoads LakeRide #HeadsUp for Mental Health has a new date, Sunday, September 19th, 2021. Registration opens May 10th, 2021 visit www.newroadslakeride.ca to learn more.
